Keep your result
When the braces come off, the teeth want to drift back. Retention prevents this.
Retention means stabilising the teeth with a retainer that is either removable or a metal wire bonded to the inside of the front teeth.
Even so, some relapse may occur. The risk is greatest in the first years after treatment. To keep the result you must use your retainer — that responsibility is yours.
Removable retainer (Essix)
A removable retainer can be a clear tray (Essix) worn every night for 5 years, then as recommended by your dentist.
Remember:
- • Take the retainer out when you eat, drink or brush.
- • Look after your retainer — keep it in its case.
- • Clean it daily with brush, soap and lukewarm water.
- • Bring the retainer to every dental visit.
Fixed retainer
A fixed retainer is a metal wire bonded behind the front teeth. The wire should not cause problems and may stay as long as you want the front teeth straight.
Remember:
- • Clean carefully around the wire and watch if it loosens.
- • If the wire comes off — keep it and bring it to the dentist.
- • Watch for any tooth shifting or gum recession.
